Gajuwaka MLA and TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao has urged the state government to give priority to setting up chemical and petrochemical parks along the Visakhapatnam-Chennai PCPIR corridor, as part of the industrial parks proposed to be developed in Andhra Pradesh under the Centre’s ‘Bhavya’ scheme.
Speaking in the assembly, Palla Srinivasa Rao said that Andhra Pradesh has immense potential to emerge as a major hub for chemical and petrochemical industries, especially along the Visakhapatnam-Chennai industrial corridor.
He said that although India supplies bulk drugs and pharmaceutical products to markets across the world, many pharmaceutical industries are facing difficulties due to inadequate availability of raw materials. Many units are having to procure key raw materials through imports at high prices, which is affecting their competitiveness and survival.
He said the Visakhapatnam-Chennai corridor has several strategic advantages, including the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport, well-developed ports and existing sea routes. He said setting up chemical and petrochemical plants in this corridor would give a big boost to allied industries, strengthen the pharmaceutical ecosystem and attract investments in line with market demand.
The government should set up common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in industrial clusters. He said that having each industry set up and operate its own effluent treatment plant would impose a significant financial burden,
He suggested that the proposed industrial parks should be developed as integrated ecosystems with residential quarters for workers, product testing and quality control centres, as well as skill development centres to prepare local youth for employment opportunities offered by the industry.
He said that in case of accidental fires, deaths or other unforeseen incidents in industrial units, the government should put in place a standard accident insurance and compensation policy in advance.
Palla Srinivasa Rao said that developing chemical and petrochemical parks with skilled human resources would help Andhra Pradesh strengthen its industrial base, provide employment opportunities to the local youth and attract huge investments.
Srinivasa Rao said that under the ‘Bhavya’ scheme, priority should be given to the Visakhapatnam-Chennai PCPIR corridor and develop it into a globally competitive industrial and pharmaceutical manufacturing hub.
