On the orders of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, along with his fellow ministers and MPs, met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament and submitted a memorandum seeking reduction of the currently applicable 40 percent GST on raw tobacco (HSN 2401) to 28 percent.
They appealed to the Union Minister to bring the problems faced by tobacco farmers in the state to the notice of the Union Minister and take immediate steps to protect the interests of the farmers.
They clarified that this is only an issue related to raw tobacco (HSN 2401) and has nothing to do with manufactured tobacco products. In the wake of the severe impact on the value of FCV tobacco produced in the state due to the GST hike, they demanded a reduction in GST from 40 percent to 28 percent keeping in mind the interests of farmers.
This decision will provide relief to tobacco farmers, dealers and exporters and will further improve the competitiveness of Indian tobacco exports in the international market, they said.
State ministers and MPs urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to look into this issue positively and take an appropriate decision at the earliest.
