Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has issued orders to take up water management in the state as per the Water Movement Plan. He suggested that drinking water needs in urban and rural areas be given first priority.
The Chief Minister conducted a review of the Water Resources Department on Friday at the State Secretariat. The CM directed the officials on the progress of Polavaram and Veligonda project works, 36 projects to be taken up in order of priority, water storage in the reservoirs of the state, water release, drinking water supply management plan, and implementation of watershed-watershed programs.
Officials explained that 89.9 percent of the civil works in the Polavaram project have been completed so far. The Water Resources Department informed the CM that the Polavaram left canal works are being completed on a war footing.
He said that the project work continued without any problem even after the recent flood of 14 lakh cusecs reached Godavari. The CM suggested that the infrastructure work required for the maintenance of the dam along with the roads at the dam site should also be taken up.
The Chief Minister ordered that activities should be taken to protect the Gandi Posamma temple near the project and protect the sentiments of the locals. He clarified that the left canal balance work should be completed up to Visakhapatnam by March next year.
He clarified that work should be done in the right and left canals of Polavaram according to the flow of 17,500 cusecs of water. He said that good names should be suggested for both the canals. He said that the areas near the Polavaram project should be utilized properly and developed as a tourist attraction.
In the context of the deficit rainfall situation in the state, he said that drinking water should be given first priority and then industrial needs should be taken care of without any problem.
He said that as a state with abundant water resources, there is a possibility of taking Godavari water to both North Andhra and the Krishna Delta region as much as required. He suggested that it should be connected with internal water transport routes from Visakhapatnam to Amaravati.
36 priority projects should be completed within the specified time frame. Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, Special Chief Secretary of the department Shashibhushan Kumar, ENC and CE were present at this review.
