A 7 year old child died and 53 people fell ill after taking chloroquine tablets distributed for the prevention of malaria in Gollaguppa village of Etapaka mandal of Polavaram district.Andhra Pradesh
Medical staff organized a malaria prevention camp in Gollaguppa village. Chloroquine tablets were distributed to the villagers, mainly children, in this camp. After taking the tablets, a 7-year-old tribal girl named Madivi Jamuna fell seriously ill due to vomiting and stomach pain and died. Another 53 people (46 children and 7 adults) fell ill.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu reacted seriously to the incident and ordered the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. Rapid response teams from Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Paderu and Vijayawada have been sent to Gollaguppa and are investigating the causes.
A total of 253 people live in Gollaguppa village. This medical camp was organized as part of preventive measures after malaria cases were recently registered in this village. However, this tragedy occurred due to the spoilage of chloroquine tablets.
He inspected the medical services being provided to the victims and spoke to the doctors to get details about their health condition. Later, while speaking to the media, he revealed the details of the situation.
He said that as a precautionary measure, 53 people from Gollaguppa village were brought to the Bhadrachalam Area Hospital, and currently they are (48 children, 5 adults) receiving treatment. He clarified that their health condition is stable and none of them are in a critical or dangerous position. The Collector clarified that a special medical camp has been set up for another 17 people in the village and they are all safe.
