The Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme, built with the aim of diverting Godavari flood waters to the Krishna Delta until the completion of the Polavaram project, is providing special services to the state’s agriculture, said State Water Resources Minister Dr. Nimmala Ramanaidu.
On Wednesday morning, the motors of the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme in Eluru district and Tadipudi Lift Irrigation Scheme in East Godavari district were started and water was released to the Krishna Delta. Later, a water aarti was offered to Godavari at the Pattiseema Delivery Point and Tadipudi Lift Irrigation Scheme.
He said that the Pattiseema Scheme, which initiated the interlinking of the Godavari-Krishna rivers, is a testament to the decision taken with foresight. He said that so far, more than 442 TMC of Godavari water has been diverted to the Krishna Delta through Pattiseema, which has benefited the state’s agriculture significantly.
The minister said that the government is working with a comprehensive plan to deal with potential Super El Nino conditions as per the instructions of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. He said that steps have been taken to utilize every drop of water.
He said that steps are being taken to increase groundwater by connecting drains and canals with tanks through the ‘Jaladhara – Jalaharati’ program. He said that so far, this program has completed 98 days and its results will be clearly visible in the coming period.
He said that experts suggest that if the groundwater level increases by one meter, the water storage capacity will increase by about 99 TMC. He said that the government is implementing a policy of giving first priority to drinking water and then irrigation water with efficient water management.
Irrigation experts have stated that the Godavari inflows are at their lowest in the past 70 years, in the beginning of July, and that currently about 8,000 cusecs of water coming into Godavari are being diverted to the Krishna Delta through Pattiseema.
