The coalition government is committed to providing security and assurance to the farmers of Godavari districts, and the irrigation calendar of 36 projects released by the Chief Minister also includes Godavari Delta modernization. The drains and canal system in the five Godavari districts will be improved on a permanent basis with a cost of Rs. 14 crore, State Irrigation Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu announced in Davileswaram today.
With the foresight of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the government is proposing and implementing the “Jaladhara-Jalaharati” program as a preventive measure to prevent farmers from facing difficulties due to the effects of El Niño, the minister said.
The state water resources minister, Dr. Nimmala Ramanaidu, said that the work for the repair of the gates of Dhavaleswaram barrage and the construction of 117 new gates will be started with Rs. 150 crores, and the reconstruction work will be initiated by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu next week.
He said that the previous government did not pay attention to the condition of the gates of the Tungabhadra project despite the warnings of experts, as a result of which the 19th gate was washed away in 2024, wasting 105 TMC of water.
However, he explained that the current government responded quickly and reconstructed the gate, saving 80 TMC of water. He also said that Rs. 250 crores were allocated for the repair of the Srisailam project and the work on the gates of the Gundlakamma project has also been completed.
He said that Dhavaleswaram barrage is the lifeblood of Godavari districts, and through it, in addition to drinking water, about 10 lakh acres are getting irrigation water. Experts warned that the barrage gates were in a dangerous condition, but the previous government ignored them.

Recalling that in 2015, during the tenure of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, 58 gates out of 175 gates were replaced at a cost of Rs. 32 crore, the minister said that now the remaining 117 gates are being completely reconstructed at a cost of Rs. 150 crore. He said the goal is to complete these works by the next cultivation season.
