a major threat to Andhra Pradesh, with landfall expected tomorrow morning (28 October) between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam. The state is on high alert, with evacuation, shelter, and rescue preparations under way.
Present situation

Arnab has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal and is moving west-northwest, then northwest toward the Andhra coast.

The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for 18 coastal and adjoining districts, mainly from Visakhapatnam to Bapatla, for 27–28 October.

Widespread rain is affecting/expected across the state on Tuesday and Wednesday, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Coastal winds may reach 90–100 kmph before intensifying further near landfall.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered mass evacuation from low-lying, flood-prone and vulnerable areas; evacuation is under way across 2,107 Swarna Grama and Swarna Ward units.

Authorities have identified 1,763 cyclone shelters and set up 2,907 district/mandal-level control rooms; another report cites 2,131 shelters across 20 districts, reflecting ongoing expansion of arrangements.

NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed, with additional teams on standby; reports mention 12 NDRF and 10 SDRF teams mobilised. Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard rescue teams, ships and aircraft are kept ready for relief and rescue operations.

Educational institutions in at least seven affected districts are closed on 27–28 October as a precaution. Beach access has been restricted and movement on coastal roads is to be suspended from Tuesday afternoon. Medical teams, ambulances, power-restoration crews and relief supplies have been positioned in vulnerable districts.
The state is also coordinating reservoir management, with instructions to create a storage capacity of about 10–12 TMC to manage inflows.

Follow evacuation orders immediately if you are in a low-lying, coastal, or flood-prone area. Avoid the sea, beaches, riverbanks, and coastal roads during the landfall period. Keep mobile phones charged, store drinking water and essential medicines, and stay indoors during peak winds.
