Former MP from Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh GV Harshakumar met AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik in New Delhi today.

The two discussed the issue of deletion of voters’ names due to the Special Comprehensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, agitation on voters’ rights and further strengthening of the March for Democracy movement at the national level.

The main agenda of the meeting was to brief the Congress national leadership on the recent ‘Prajaswamy Yatra’ that has gained momentum. The main objective of the movement is to protest against the alleged irregularities and mass violations of voters’ rights due to the Special Comprehensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls undertaken by the Election Commission.

Comprehensive strategies to protect constitutional rights. Harsha Kumar explained to Mukul the ground-level impact of the SIR process in Andhra Pradesh, and the two discussed at length the action plans needed to further intensify their struggle to protect democratic values across the country.

The two rose through the ranks in the Congress party youth wing in the mid-1980s. Mukul Wasnik led the national level as the All India President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) from 1984 to 1986, while G.V. Harsha Kumar became an undisputed leader in youth mobilisation as the Vice President of the Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress.

During this period, growing up through similar youth and student organisations laid the foundation for mutual trust between them. This common ground in political mobilisation led to their focus on grassroots campaigns such as the current democratic programmes and the ‘March for Democracy’.

This discussion is a sign of strong support from AP for the ongoing protests against the Congress electoral system. Their discussions are mainly aimed at raising the issue of deletion of voters’ names due to SIR on a national platform.
